CLUEDO (2008)

RUMOUR! INTRIGUE! POWER! PERSONALITY! DEATH! SUCCESS! Sounds great doesn't it and, yes, fair enough, it looks different and has brought CLUEDO bang up to date - with six suspects who are now super celebrities that you couldn't really give a fig about. Gone are the character titles (i.e. Colonel, Reverend & Professor). The brand new rule book (Looking almost like the cover of a glossy gossip magazine) introduces the suspects on the back page.
Kasandra Scarlet is now an actress, Jack Mustard is a sports pundit, Diane White was a child actress, Jacob Green is the man in the know (which means he does bugger all and gets paid wads), Eleanor Peacock is a wealthy fund raiser and Victor Plum is a video game designer.
The suspect cards simply now show the characters by their surnames.
***************
The rooms of the Mansion have now been updated with only the Hall, Dining Room & Kitchen surviving from the original game.
Along with the character titles & most of the original rooms, we have also lost the lead piping and spanner from the list of weapons, but have gained a bat, axe, dumbbell, poison & trophy. Along with the pistol, candlestick, knife & rope this gives us now 9 weapons.
So, on to RUMOUR!!! Actually, rumour is simply a new way of saying suggestion so when you enter a room now and say "I think it was Scarlet with the Trophy in the Spa", you are actually starting a rumour and not making a suggestion!!
***************
Right! So, let's get on to INTRIGUE!! Well, Intrigue is simply a deck of 24 cards, 16 of which just contain instructions such as "Take another turn" & "Add 6 to your die roll" while the remaining 8 cards show the dial of a clock showing 8 o'clock. (More about those 8 cards later - See under DEATH). If someone plays a card saying "The rumour stays unanswered" that simply means that if someone starts a rumour i.e. Scarlet with the Trophy in the Spa then no one need show a card. Wow!! That IS Intrigue!
There are three ways of gaining Intrigue cards. If you are moved to a room during a Rumour you MAY take a card if you require. There are two dice in this version. One has the numbers 1 - 6 as usual, the other has 2 - 6 and a question mark. The board likewise has question marks dotted around. If you land on one of these or roll the question mark on the dice, you MUST take an Intrigue card. NB Notice that on this board there is now a Pool in the centre of the board. This is where the weapons are placed at the start of the game and where you have to go to to make your final accusation.
Now! On to POWER & PERSONALITY. When you start the game you take a Power/Personality card corresponding to the character you are playing. Each player has a power which they can use once during the game. e.g. Plum's power is that once per game he may start two rumours on the same turn. When the power has been played, the player turns his card over to the personality side which is pointless and has nothing to do with the game.
The playing pieces are now just plastic pieces showing question marks in coloured bases. The weapons are silver except that damn plastic rope again!!!
Now what's left? Ah, yes DEATH!!!!!! This is where the clocks come into play. As stated, there are 8 clock cards. These are mixed up with the Intrigue cards and have no effect with the first seven. But - whoever draws the eighth has been killed by the murderer and is out of the game. As the rules point out, this rule could actually mean everyone is killed by the murderer so no one wins. Now! Pardon me if I seem confused but, as a for instance, I am playing Mustard and I draw the eighth clock so have been killed by the murderer. With me so far? Good. A few turns later another player wins the game but it turns out Mustard was the murderer. So Mustard has killed Mustard. Do you see the flaw?? It was a neat idea but not thought through to its natural conclusion.
The detective notes are quite fun looking like someone has scribbled them down in a hurry. Also below is the detective notes envelope and bottom of the box.
And finally - SUCCESS!!! If you get through this game without being killed I guess that IS Success.
I know I seem to be a little negative about this game but it IS good to have a new version and it's always an exciting time when a new CLUEDO emerges. I think it is just because the characters in this game are so unlikeable it's the only negative thing - it looks good and Mustard just seems to get better looking as the years go by :))
