This is the first DVD I bought without seeing the film first. Luckily, I was not disappointed!
Made in 1985 and starring Tim Curry as Wadsworth The Butler it is the story of six people invited to a creaky old Mansion and given very familiar aliases. All six are being blackmailed by Mr. Boddy. Wadsworth has invited everyone along to have it out face to face with Boddy and then inform the Police. Boddy gives everyone a surprise package. Miss Scarlet receives a Candlestick, Mrs. White a Rope, Mrs. Peacock a Dagger, Mr Green ends up with a piece of lead pipe, Colonel Mustard is given a wrench and Plum accepts a Revolver.
Boddy suggests murdering Wadsworth so that Boddy can get away and the suspects indiscretions can be forgotten. He switched out the lights...some thuds are heard...and then a gun shot! The lights come back on again and Mr. Boddy lies dead! But he has not been shot!
When the cook is later found dead, the suspects realise they are in for a night to remember!
This really is a very funny film with plenty of classic lines. One of my favourites being Colonel Mustard discussing Rudyard Kipling. He hands Miss Scarlet a tray of cakes and asks if she likes Kipling. "Sure," replies Scarlet, "I'll eat anything"!!
Starring Tim Curry as Wadsworth, Eileen Brennen as Mrs. Peacock, continually screaming and looking baffled, Madeline Kahn as Mrs. White, who appears to have buried quite a few husbands...including some of her own, Lesley Ann Warren as Miss Scarlet, taking all in her stride including the attentions of Professor Plum, Christopher Lloyd as said Professor, continually gazing in awe at the Maid, Yvette's, cleavage, Martin Mull as Colonel Mustard, a dab hand at pouring whisky & Michael McKean as Mr. Green, continually claiming "I didn't do it!!!"
The film has three separate endings and all three are included on the DVD. You can play the DVD with all endings or simply choose to watch the film with one random end.
I watched it three times in one week, so I highly recommend it.
Just one small point. As the characters are given pseudonyms, it was a shame that they didn't dress the part. Scarlet in a red dress, Peacock in blue etc. but no matter! :)
