CLICK ON THE THUMBNAILS TO OPEN THE LARGER PICTURE
A whole new ERA of cluedo opened with this version. For the first time no accusations were made during the game. Instead you went round the board collecting clues (normal suspect, weapon, room cards) and each card had a unique code of two colours and two numbers on each corner.
As can be seen, three new characters were introduced in this game. Captain Brown, Mr. Slate Grey and the first appearance of Miss Peach.
There were also three new weapons, the blunderbuss, the axe and the poison.
Along with the normal nine rooms this made 27 playing cards in all.
The board also underwent a facelift including a veranda section where four items of garden furniture were placed and all the rooms now had squares within.
The playing pieces for this edition were excellent. moving away from the traditional pawns we were treated to plastic busts of the characters.
This picture also shows the four items of furniture. the sundial, the orb, the urn and the bird table. At the front is one of thirty small blue counters each one numbered 1 - 30. On the board are numerous super cluedo squares. At the beginning of the game, the thirty counters are placed, face down, on these squares randomly and the four items of furniture are placed around the veranda on similar squares.
The weapons are then placed in small holders (except the candlestick and poison that stand on their own) and one put in each room on any square.
The three murder cards are removed as normal and placed, one each, in one of three containers, the backs of these slide off and it can be a little awkward at times to insert the card.
In this version it is imperative that no one knows which card goes in which holder. There is one green, one black and one beige holder.
The game begins and all players head off to land on one of the blue counters. Once the counter number is noted the player landing refers to his detective notes. In this game it is a wipe free fold over board. On the front are the instructions for all 30 counters. Inside are the unique combinations of all the murder cards. As can be seen in the picture above, there is a red square and a number two. Checking the inside of the detective notes it is discovered that two cards have this combination - the blunderbuss and the conservatory. Now the reason for not knowing which card is in which container becomes clear.
As an example of play, say the counter landed on was number 25 - "there is a clue on the candlestick". all players must now rush to the candlestick and the first to get there takes the top super clue card and follows the instructions.
If it instructs you to look under one flap you can choose any flap from any holder, note the number or colour and mark it on your scorecard.
If you are told to collect murder cards, these are just the normal suspect, weapon etc. cards that you add to your hand. To use the example above, if you now drew a murder card and it was the blunderbuss then you would know that the card in the green holder was the conservatory.
Don't be discouraged If you are miles from the candlestick and everyone is closer, there are now secret passages in every room so you can speed across the board with a new agility.
This game is a totally different version but with all the instructions to follow above, I still find it rather dull and the murder cards just seem to pile up and don't do anything. I really miss the accusations and the bluffing during a normal game.
Unfortunately, this synopsis was also used for the wonderful Passport to Murder in 2000 which is such a lovely set that I have to sometimes forget the game is so dull and just go for it.
